Reflection: global warming and climate change

Global warming and climate change are two related hot topics in the world, especially in view of the coming UN Summit in Copenhagen.

Kids talk about global warming and climate change, because that is what their science teachers say.

People talk about global warming and climate change because we can feel the effect of the climatic change. When it is time to rain, and the weather turns hot and sunny, we blame it on global warming and climate change.

The newspaper talks about global warming and climate change because these are the hot topics to sell newspapers. Many disasters and weird weather patterns are blamed on global warming and climate change.

The scientists talk about global warming and climate change in terms of statistics. The computation and computer model points to a very gloomy future for Planet Earth.

Politicians are concerned about global warming and climate change, because they hope other countries can reduce carbon emissions, and stop pointing the fingers at them.

The only time when we really take global warming and climate change very, very serious is when we are victims of disasters. Sometimes, we are the indirect victims. When a drought or flood destroys the crops in a country, we experience the price increases. Whatever hurts our pockets require our full attention.

When global warming and climate change destroy the harvest of many crops, we will see price increases in cereals, bread, cookies, coffee, tea, poultry, meat, sausages, cheese etc. That is the time when we really feel the pain of global warming and climate change. Other than that, global warming and climate change are just news in the newspaper.

Amidst all the talks and gloomy data on global warming and climate change, nobody really gives serious thoughts to the most important factor, that is the healing power of Planet Earth.

All of us know about the water cycle, life cycle and whatever cycle of Planet Earth to sustain life. However, none of us really understand or appreciate the wonderful mechanisms of Planet Earth.

After a hundred years of observing the El Nino and El Nina effect, the scientists still do not know what causes the effect. There is so much we do not know about Planet Earth that the computer models always miss the prediction.

How will Planet Earth response to global warming? So far, the climate change is the response that we can see and feel. The effect of global warming and climate change result in melting glacier, rising sea water and many others.

We cannot assume that these are the only effects or that the effect will get worse. The healing mechanism of Planet Earth can kick in anytime to produce new effect.

One of the contributors to global warming is the carbon emission. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. Generally plants in the greenhouse grow very fast and healthy due to abundant carbon dioxide and abundant sunlight.

When the carbon dioxide level in atmosphere increases to a certain level, the same thing will probably happen.

The plants, trees and grass may grow very fast. The green algae in the sea may grow so fast that the sea becomes green instead of blue. The resulting oxygen content may be enough to keep the atmosphere cooler, and restore the natural optimum temperature for the survival of lives.

There may be many undesirable side effects.

Whatever it is, I think it’s time we put trust in the healing mechanism of Planet Earth. At the same time, we have to do our part to reduce global warming, so that the climate change is not so devastating.
