It is strange to say that most of us are getting unhappy despite the fact that we enjoy the benefits of having more material goods. We are definitely richer than many hungry folks in the developing country.
Some people with a higher education, plus a longer lifespan are not happy too.
While money does contribute to happiness, it does not guarantee that money brings happiness. While a marriage brings happiness to two persons deeply in love with each other, that does not mean that marriage is the key to happiness.
Happiness is an elusive emotion and does not rely on money, educational level, longevity and health.
It is surprisingly to many of us that Nigerians are the happiest people on Earth, despite the fact that Nigeria is one of the countries known for its corruption and poverty.
We can see that happiness is independent of where we live, what we eat, how we live and what we know.
We can learn about happiness from the lifestyle of the Nigerians. We need to reflect on our attitude towards life and find happiness out of so many miseries in life.
The first lesson is do not think too much.
Nigerians are known for their ability to live in the present moment. They do not worry too much about the future.
Most of us worry too much, and forget to live in the moment.
The second lesson is to maintain close relationship with friends and family members.
Nigerians enjoy the support of big families. They are very closed to their family and friends.
Most of us are afraid to share our feelings for fear of getting hurt. Most of us do not enjoy others to invade our thoughts and see our weaknesses. That is the reason for unhappiness in marriage and friendship.
The third lesson is to make a decision to be happy.
Happiness is a choice. We can make a decision to be happy. We can let nothing stop us from feeling happy.
The fourth lesson is to learn to be grateful for what we have.
Nothing is permanent in this world. A happy marriage ends in divorce or death. As long as we enjoy what we have at the time when we need it, we can be grateful for it.
As long as we are happy for the opportunity to live and breath, that is happiness.
We can choose to be grateful for the dreadful and boring job. We can also choose to complain about everyone and everything.
It is better to choose happiness and grateful for what we have.
The fifth lesson is to reduce exposure to bad news.
The Nigerians are fortunate that they do not have access to all the bad news of the world. They live in the secure world of families and friends.
We do not need to have our daily dosage of bad news either.
Switch off the TV and enjoy watching the stars. That is happiness.
The sixth lesson is to make use of a spiritual connection to find happiness.
A spiritual connection does not necessarily mean going to church. Many people go to church to think about making money. That is not a spiritual connection.
It is good to ponder about life, and to understand ourselves. We need to face ourselves sooner or later. The worst judge is always our conscience.
We can read books to find the spiritual connection. We can visit nature to find the spiritual connection. We can draw, sing, and do work to find the spiritual connection.
The seventh lesson is to manage our time.
We like to feel that we are useful in some ways. A busy lifestyle enable us to lead a fulfilling life. However, we need time for relaxation as well.
A good time management is the key to find happiness.
The eighth lesson is to laugh.
Many of us hardly laugh heartily in a day. We try to look respectable. We are too conscious of our image to play the fool.
We have lost the ability to laugh heartily at every single crazy joke.
We have lost the courage to laugh our way to happiness.
Happiness is an elusive emotion. Some of us do not realize that we can choose to find happiness in our lives. We wait too long to realize that we have everything we need for happiness.
Have you found the secret of happiness?
