I think most people do not know about Google Affiliate Program either.
They are more familiar with Clickbank affiliate marketing, Amazon affiliate marketing, Commission Junction affiliate marketing, and Ebay affiliate marketing.
Hardly anyone mention anything about Google Affiliate Program.
At the moment, Google Affiliate Program consists of merchants in the US. Google Affiliate Network is very similar to Commission Junction.
You must have a valid Google Adsense account in order to qualify for Google Affiliate Network.
The same terms and conditions apply.
That means you cannot use traffic exchanges to market the products. You cannot engage in artificial traffic generation.
There are many merchants in the program. You need to sign up for each and every merchants, and wait for their approval.
Some merchants will reject your application to market their products, especially if you do not have a website or a blog, and are not a resident of US.
Some merchants are well known brand throughout the world, and they welcome affiliate marketers all over.
The problem is in getting sales. A lot of clicks do not mean sales.
Most merchants sell physical products, such as Sears and Kmart. Some merchants are travel agencies and hotel chains.
It is hard to get sales if the bulk of your readers come from Asia. They will certainly not buy products from US and pay for international freight if they can get it in their home town.
The merchants in Google Affiliate program have to design their own banners and links for affiliate marketers to use.
Some of them have weekly promotion, and well designed banners. Other merchants do not provide such service.
If you get the links for weekly promotion or special holiday promotion, you must remember to get it off once the offer period expires.
The commission varies. Some merchants give a very low commission, as low as 2%.
Some are more generous, with commission in excess of 10%. All earned commission are paid through Google Adsense.
The cookie duration varies too. I like those merchants with 60 days cookie. However, there are some with less than 10 days cookie duration.
Barnes & Noble is worse. The cookie is one time. That means if the reader clicks through and does not buy, you do not earn a single cent.
Even if the reader bookmarks the page, and returns later to buy the products, you gain nothing.
That is why selecting the right merchants with the best commission rate is very important. Selecting one with a longer cookie period is even more important.
