There are many people telling us that work smart, not hard is the way to get rewarded.
However, the fact is that certain jobs are just routine tasks. There is no way to work smart on that. For example, the waiters and waitresses just have to put food on your table.
There is simply no way to work smart on that. They can do the work with a smiling face, so that you feel good and want to give them tips.
You expect a smiling waitress to serve you food. You pay enough money for the good service. You do not expect the waitress to take short cut, such as to put all the dishes in a trolley and bring them to you. You expect the dishes to come in the right order, not all at the same time.
That is not good service, even though that is a way to work smart.
Some jobs require us to work smart, and these are almost always the higher level jobs, such as managerial jobs.
Most of us cannot work smart. We just are not smart enough.
If we are smart enough, we will reach the managerial positions. The fact is that we lost out in school, and we lost out to the top performers in the workplace.
We do not have their intelligence to spot problems, determine the mood of bosses, and to provide solutions. That is why more people are doing transactional tasks instead of mentally challenging tasks. In this current economic situation, we are happy if we are employed or we know how to ace a job interview. Many companies are outsourcing the transactional tasks to land of low labor cost.
It does not help that many of us watch too much TV at night and throughout the weekend. We know that watching too much TV make us dumber and dumber, since we do not need to exert mentally when watching TV.
However, we hate to use our brain cells. We hate to do Mathematics and other mentally challenging exercises. We leave all the hard decisions to bosses.
In this case, we are not ready to work smart. If we cannot work smart, then we have to work hard.
The fact is that work hard means to work longer hours, and to do more transactional tasks. If we still refuse to work hard, then we cannot blame anyone if we get stuck in a dead end job.
Work hard and work smart is the only way to get more money.
Even those who can work smart will have to work hard to get ahead. Those holding high level managerial posts work smart and work hard. Even when they are entertaining clients in the golf course or business dinner, they have to think of building good relationship, and help the clients to solve problems.
They cannot simply relax and think of nothing.
That is not the way to work smart.
That is why you have to work hard and work smart if you can. If you cannot work smart, at least work hard. Otherwise, you will regret when you see your colleagues get the promotions and become your bosses.
